Don't get "Lost" as we present the All-Island Team:

Tony Banks: Probably felt a bit deserted when he lost his starting job as Baltimore Ravens quarterback to Trent Dilfer in 2000, but he did get a Super Bowl ring that year thanks to Ray Lewis and crew on defense. As for Banks Island, it's part of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, which looks like the sort of place to which backup quarterbacks get banished. The island is named for Sir Joseph Banks, a British horticulturist credited with bringing eucalyptus to this part of the world.

John Block: The 6-foot-9 power forward swatted 35 shots for the 1973-74 Kansas City-Omaha Kings and probably restrained his ego better than Adrian Block, the Dutch explorer who charted a piece of land 11 miles from modern-day Rhode Island and named it after himself in 1614. We're guessing they play basketball on Block Island, but the quality isn't scintillating: Lots of shots that never get to the rim and lots of drives to the basket that get cut short by step-slow defenders.

FULL ARTICLE

Bike Polo Isn't For the Timid

By Dan Murphy
Special to Page 2

MADISON, Wis. -- Imagine beer, bikes and polo meeting on asphalt and you'll start to get an idea of what hard-court bike polo is all about.

This little-known sport is an incredibly distant relative of horse polo -- but without any of the gentility. Unfortunately, fever has also reached Tebow.

After fumbling a few snaps and misfiring on several passes in a sickly Senior Bowl practice on Monday, Tebow was sharper on Tuesday despite published reports that he had strep throat and a 103.5-degree body temperature a night earlier. While one woman at Ladd-Peebles Stadium held up an orange and blue sign reading "Tebow: God's Gift to Football Fans," he completed a deep pass to running back John Conner and fumbled only one snap in a seven-on-seven workout.

The question is whether Tebow has enough gifts to make it in the NFL as an every-down quarterback following his record-setting career at Florida, where he won two national championships (2006, 2008) and a Heisman Trophy (2007) in his first three seasons. Florida "settled" for a 13-1 record and No. 3 ranking in his senior year.

FULL ARTICLE

College Cup: A New Look To American Soccer

By Roger van der Horst
Special to NCAA.com

CARY, N.C. — If the Men's College Cup is any indication, the face of American soccer is gradually changing.

"It's becoming more and more diverse, without question, both in the Hispanic market obviously and in the African-American community," said Charlie Slagle, chief executive of Raleigh, N.C.-based Capital Area Soccer League and co-director of the College Cup.

Almost a quarter of Wake Forest's 27-man roster is African-American.
